The long read
Algiers, Brussels, and the price of partnership
A durable Algeria–Europe energy relationship needs more than gas contracts. It needs a shared industrial vision.
Contracts move gas. Partnerships move economies. The distinction matters because Europe and Algeria are negotiating both at once — and often confusing them.
For Algiers, the prize is not merely export revenue but industrial development: local value addition, technology transfer, and a role in the hydrogen supply chains Europe is trying to build.
You cannot ask a supplier to invest in your energy transition while treating them only as a spot-market backstop.
A credible partnership prices in that asymmetry — and designs around it.
